WHO IS SOFT ROT?

The human beneath these illustrations can usually be found wandering the forests, shores, and fields of New Brunswick.

Her goal is to create a field guide to the province she calls home — a growing collection of its plants, fungi, wildlife, and overlooked little wonders, illustrated one species at a time.

She has always wanted to know the names of the things growing, crawling, swimming, and flying around her. Drawing them became the most natural way to learn.

The collection is intended to keep growing, gradually becoming a visual record of New Brunswick and the life found here.

This is her love letter to New Brunswick.

HOW DOES SOFT ROT CREATE?

Each illustration begins with research and close observation of the species — its form, defining characteristics, textures, and details.

Inspiration comes constantly from the natural world around her: forests, shorelines, fields, and the small details that are easily overlooked.

From there, each subject is drawn digitally by hand, built carefully through Soft Rot’s distinctive linework — dot by dot, line by line — before being finished with colour.

Every illustration is created individually, adding one more species to an ever-growing field guide of New Brunswick.

WHAT DOES SOFT ROT MEAN?

Soft Rot is a reminder that nothing lasts forever.

Plants wither. Stars fade. Bones return to dust. But decay isn’t the end of the story.

The forest grows because something came before it. Fallen trees feed seedlings. Mushrooms bloom from rot. Every ending leaves room for something new.

Soft Rot is about meeting change with intention — being kinder, staying curious, embracing the unexpected, and leaving the world a little more beautiful than you found it.

We’re all rotting slowly.

ROT SOFT WITH ME.
