FIELD GUIDE NOTES
Witch Hazel — Hamamelis virginiana
Witch hazel is a native shrub found in forests and along woodland edges in New Brunswick.
It is especially recognizable in autumn, when its unusual yellow flowers appear after the leaves begin to fall. The flowers have long, narrow petals that curl and twist around the branches.
Witch hazel produces small woody seed capsules that mature the following year. When ripe, they can split open and launch their seeds several metres from the parent plant.
