FIELD GUIDE NOTES

Bloodroot — Sanguinaria canadensis

Bloodroot is a spring-blooming woodland wildflower native to eastern North America, including New Brunswick.

Its white flowers appear early in the season, often before the plant’s distinctive deeply lobed leaves have fully unfurled.

The plant gets its name from the reddish-orange sap found in its underground rhizome and stems. Bloodroot is toxic if ingested and should not be eaten.
