Splendid Waxcap — Hygrocybe splendidissima
The splendid waxcap is a striking red mushroom with a smooth, dry cap and waxy gills. Its cap begins broadly conical and can flatten with age, often keeping a raised centre.
The stem is typically red to orange and may be irregularly flattened or grooved. One of its more unusual identifying features is a distinct honey-like smell that develops as the mushroom dries.
Waxcaps are generally associated with old, nutrient-poor grasslands, where their brightly coloured fruiting bodies can appear in autumn.
