Devil’s Tooth — Hydnellum peckii
Devil’s tooth is a striking tooth fungus named for the blood-red droplets that can appear on the surface of its pale cap.
Instead of gills, the underside is covered in tiny tooth-like spines where spores are produced.
It grows on the ground in association with trees, forming a mycorrhizal relationship with their roots. Young specimens can produce vivid red droplets, which become less noticeable as the mushroom matures.
A strange little fungus with an appropriately dramatic name.
