FIELD GUIDE NOTES
Atlantic Herring — Clupea harengus
Atlantic herring are small, silvery schooling fish found throughout the North Atlantic, including the coastal waters of Atlantic Canada.
They travel in large schools and feed mainly on plankton, while also serving as an important food source for larger fish, seabirds, and marine mammals.
Herring move between feeding and spawning areas throughout the year, and their abundance makes them an important part of both marine food webs and Atlantic fisheries.
