FIELD GUIDE NOTES
Lumpfish — Cyclopterus lumpus
The lumpfish is a round-bodied North Atlantic fish recognized by its bumpy skin, small fins, and distinctive suction disc on its underside.
That disc is formed from modified pelvic fins and allows the fish to cling to rocks and other surfaces in strong currents.
Lumpfish are found in cold coastal waters, including Atlantic Canada. During the breeding season, adults move into shallower water, where males guard the eggs until they hatch.
