Barred Owl — Strix varia
The barred owl is a large woodland owl recognized by its dark eyes, rounded head, and brown-and-white barred plumage.
It is most often found in mature forests, wooded wetlands, and areas near rivers and swamps, where it hunts small mammals, birds, amphibians, and other prey.
Barred owls live year-round in New Brunswick and are especially well known for their distinctive call, often remembered as “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you-all?”
