FIELD GUIDE NOTES
Mallard — Anas platyrhynchos
Mallards are familiar dabbling ducks found across New Brunswick in ponds, marshes, rivers, lakes, and sheltered coastal waters.
Males are easily recognized by their glossy green heads, white neck rings, and chestnut-brown chests, while females are mottled brown with an orange-and-black bill.
They feed by tipping forward in shallow water to reach aquatic plants, seeds, and small invertebrates, and are often seen year-round wherever open water remains available.
