Mourning Cloak — Nymphalis antiopa
The mourning cloak is a large, dark butterfly with pale yellow wing borders and a row of iridescent blue spots along the edges.
Unlike many butterflies, adults overwinter and can be among the first butterflies seen in spring.
Its caterpillars feed on trees including willow, aspen, birch, elm, and cottonwood, while adults often feed on tree sap and rotting fruit rather than flower nectar. Mourning cloaks are found across North America, including New Brunswick.
