FIELD GUIDE NOTES
Scorpion Fly — Mecoptera
The scorpion fly is an unusual insect with a long, beak-like snout, four narrow wings, and an elongated body.
Male scorpion flies in many species have a curved abdomen resembling a scorpion’s tail, but they cannot sting.
They are often found in cool, damp woodland habitats, where they feed on dead insects, small invertebrates, and other organic material.
