FIELD GUIDE NOTES
Northern Cardinal — Cardinalis cardinalis
The northern cardinal is a distinctive songbird known for its crest, thick orange-red bill, and rich red colouring in males, while females are mostly warm brown with reddish accents.
Cardinals are typically found in shrubby woodland edges, gardens, and other areas with dense cover, where they feed on seeds, fruits, and insects.
The species has expanded its range northward over time and is now seen in parts of southern New Brunswick, though it is still less common there than in regions farther south.
